2nd Battalion 12th Marines joined the 12th Marine Regiment in redeployment to Okinawa, effectivly ending their service in Vietnam, which ran from 1965 through 1971. 2nd Battalion was active in the defense of the Demilitarized Zone, fighting from notorious firebase's as Con Thien, Gio Linh, and Khe Sanh known for relentless NVA incoming artillery.

Elements of 2nd Battalion remained in Vietnam until the last day of American troop withdrawl joining the remaing Marines on the deck of the USS Forrester after evacuation.
